Bank Housekeeper and Cook
What Abbeyfield Offer You
In line with your casual (bank) worker assignment agreement, we offer competitive pay that is in line with those of our employed staff in similar roles. And depending on how many hours you work, you will accrue leave at an equivalent rate of 31 days paid leave in a full calendar year, inclusive of bank/public holidays (pro rata).
To carry out this role, you will be provided with mandatory training to get you started, as part of a comprehensive induction. To work for us in future assignments, you will be expected to keep your mandatory training up to date.
First and foremost, you will be a naturally caring person, who is compassionate, and understands the needs of older people. Further, you’ll be able to communicate, interact well with, and build strong working relationships a wide range of people in varied situations. And in a modern workplace, as you would expect, you should be able to use computers and IT applications, and be able to read, write and work with numbers to a good standard.
A strong and supportive team player, you’ll also need to be a competent cook, who can keep to a budget. You’ll also be skilled in supervising and supporting your team of General Assistants, and will know how to get the best from them.
If you are already experienced in working in a similar role within services for older people, and have knowledge of tenancy management and tenant participation, then even better. It would also be beneficial if you held a current driving licence. You will also need to have a First Aid Certificate and Food Hygiene Certificate. However, if you do not possess these, full training will be provided to ensure you obtain these within the first few months.
We are committed to providing the highest standards of care, and we believe that great care starts with great people. Are you a caring, compassionate and welcoming person, who understands the needs of older people and is respectful at all times? Are you comfortable communicating and collaborating with a wide range of people in varied situations as well as a strong and confident team player?
And because we take the wellbeing of our residents and staff very seriously, you won't be surprised that to work for us, you must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (other than in exceptional circumstances), and intend to have any further booster vaccinations that are made available.
For over 60 years, Abbeyfield has been a charity that provides housing for elderly people across the UK and internationally. It is our mission to enhance the quality of life for our residents through excellent accommodation in a stimulating environment to help maintain a socially active life.
Abbeyfield is more than a home; it’s a neighbourhood, a community, a family. Our core behaviours are to be welcoming to everyone, celebrate the positives, work collaboratively, take responsibility, and be adaptable to changing circumstances.
Best of all, we’re a charity, meaning that the interests of our valued staff and residents sit at the heart of what we do, not shareholders.
Your role at Abbeyfield
This role will cover both of our Blackpool houses - Harrowside House (South Shore) and Norbreck House (North Shore). As on of our highly valued Housekeepers, you're at the front line of delivery. You’ll ensure all aspects of the Houses run smoothly and efficiently, by coordinating and managing all house staff. You also ensure the catering service runs efficiently in line with budget, so the role may include cooking and meals preparation for large groups of residents.
Your role is to maintain service continuity to our residents, through ensuring an efficient handover process is adopted by all house staff. You’ll go out of your way to ensure that all residents feel welcome, included and involved in the house(s), and matters affecting the house are communicated to them as required.
You’ll organise social activities, consistent with housing management and health and safety requirements. You’ll consult with residents and volunteer groups, and the activities you design and provide reflect Abbeyfield values and policies, and do not interfere with the smooth running of the house, and are appropriate to the requirements of residents.
Independence of residents is maximised in line with their abilities. And all residents remain involved in the community in line with their individual needs, aspirations and abilities.
You’ll take responsibility for ensuring all staff, volunteers, trades persons and other visitors are managed effectively when on site, and all records and administration are accurate and kept up to date. And naturally, you will go out of your way to ensure that all areas of the House(s) are clean, tidy and meet all Health and Safety and Environmental Health requirements.
A Great Place to Work
Located in the South Shore of Blackpool, Harrowside House was built in 1964 and renovated in 1990. We are located close to local shops, cafes and restaurants. Popular attractions are within walking distance of the house, such as Blackpool Pleasure Beach and amusement centres, but a regular tram service is accessible that runs past our home to other local attractions.
Set on the North Shore of Blackpool, Norbreck House was built in 1899 and acquired by Abbeyfield in 1986. Our house is located close to local attractions such as the Promenade, Winter Gardens and the famous Blackpool Tower. There are plenty of shops, cafes and restaurants nearby and many places to enjoy traditional fish and chips should our residents wish to go out for a meal.
The house has 10 rooms and one flat, all of which have ensuite facilities. Our residents spend time in our attractive and comfortable communal areas with their loved ones and families.
Our professional team are compassionate and devoted to the needs of our residents and work well together to make a real difference to the lives of our residents. We all share the same passionate goal of putting our residents first and treating them with respect and dignity.
If you’re after a rewarding role with lots of variety and feel that you can make a positive contribution to our team, we would be interested in hearing from you.
Our home offers 10 rooms and one flat, all of which have ensuite facilities. The hall, dining and living areas were extensively modernised in August 2014. Our residents often enjoy walking along the seafront or sitting outside the house taking in the sea air.
Good relationships exist between our kind and caring team and our residents which result in a warm, friendly and companionable environment at our home.
Our long standing team set themselves high standards to meet the needs of all of our residents. We value every member of our team since we genuinely feel that they all contribute to making a real difference to the daily lives of our residents. In return we offer a great place to work, as well as competitive pay, pension and ongoing training.
